What is Fitrana?
Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr) is a compulsory charitable payment that purifies the fasting person from any indecent act or speech during Ramadan. It also provides food for the poor so they can celebrate Eid al-Fitr with dignity.
“The fasting of the month of Ramadan will be hanging between earth and heavens and it will not be raised up to the Divine Presence without paying Zakat al-Fitr.” — Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Who Must Pay?
- Every adult Muslim (male and female)
- Payment on behalf of minor children
- Payment on behalf of dependents
- Those who fasted AND those exempt
Note: Unlike Zakat, there is no nisab (minimum wealth threshold) for Fitrana.
