What is Aqeeqah?
Aqeeqah is the Islamic tradition of sacrificing an animal on the occasion of a child’s birth. It is performed as an act of gratitude to Allah and to welcome the newborn.
Aqeeqah Rules
When to Perform
Traditionally on the 7th day after birth. Can also be done on the 14th or 21st day. If missed, it can be done later.
Number of Animals
- For a boy: 2 sheep/goats
- For a girl: 1 sheep/goat
Distribution of Meat
- One-third for the family
- One-third for relatives and neighbors
- One-third for the poor

Is Aqeeqah obligatory?
According to most scholars, Aqeeqah is Sunnah mu’akkadah (highly recommended) rather than obligatory.
Can parents do Aqeeqah for themselves?
Yes, if Aqeeqah was not done in childhood, a person can do it for themselves as an adult.
