What is Qurbani?

Qurbani (also called Udhiyah) is the sacrifice of an animal during Eid ul-Adha. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) in obedience to Allah’s command.

Who Must Give Qurbani?

Qurbani is obligatory (wajib) according to the Hanafi school on every Muslim who:

  • Is of sound mind
  • Has reached puberty
  • Possesses the Nisab (minimum wealth threshold)

When is Qurbani?

Qurbani can be performed during the three days of Eid ul-Adha (10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah), after the Eid prayer.

Types of Animals

  • Sheep/Goat: 1 share per animal
  • Cow/Buffalo: Up to 7 shares per animal
  • Camel: Up to 7 shares per animal

Is Qurbani compulsory?

According to the Hanafi school, Qurbani is wajib (obligatory) on those who meet the criteria. Other schools consider it Sunnah mu’akkadah (highly recommended).

Can I give Qurbani on behalf of deceased?

Yes, you can give Qurbani on behalf of deceased relatives as Sadaqah for them.
