Who Must Pay?

Every Muslim who has food in excess of their needs for Eid day must pay Fitrana for themselves and their dependents (children, elderly parents they support, etc.).

When to Pay?

  • Best time: Before Eid prayer
  • Latest: Can be given in last few days of Ramadan
  • After Eid prayer: Becomes Sadaqah, not Fitrana

How Much?

The Prophet ļ·ŗ prescribed one Sa’ (approximately 2.5-3kg) of dates, barley, or equivalent staple food. Most scholars calculate this as the monetary equivalent in your local currency.

What is the difference between Zakat and Fitrana?

Zakat is 2.5% of savings above Nisab, paid once per lunar year. Fitrana is a fixed amount paid per person at the end of Ramadan.

Do I pay Fitrana for my children?

Yes, you pay Fitrana for yourself and all dependents, including children (even newborns born before Eid).

Can I pay Fitrana early in Ramadan?

Many scholars allow paying early in Ramadan so charities can distribute it before Eid.
