What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. There are two measures:
- Gold Nisab: 87.48 grams of gold (approximately 3 ounces)
- Silver Nisab: 612.36 grams of silver (approximately 21 ounces)
Most scholars recommend using the silver nisab as it ensures more people can benefit from Zakat.
How to Calculate Zakat
- Add up all your Zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, investments, business stock)
- Subtract any immediate debts you owe
- Check if your net assets exceed the Nisab threshold
- If above Nisab, pay 2.5% of your total Zakatable assets
What Assets Are Zakatable?
Zakatable (Pay Zakat On):
- Cash and bank balances
- Gold and silver (jewelry included)
- Stocks, shares, and investments
- Business inventory and stock
- Rental income
- Agricultural produce (different rate)
- Money owed to you (expected to be repaid)
Not Zakatable:
- Primary residence
- Personal car
- Furniture and household items
- Clothes for personal use
